Though little is known of the mysterious Deep Ones, whispers in many coastal town tell of their proclivity for mating with other species. The offspring of such unions are known as Deep One Hybrids - resembling their terrestrial parents, but marked by large, dark, glassy eyes, lipless mouths, clammy skin, and visible gills. These traits become more and more apparent as they age, until they finally transform completely into Deep Ones and forsake the land entirely. Deep One Hybrids have an intense connection to the sea and rarely travel far inland; they tend to stay in the isolated coastal towns into which they're born, as their odd features and eldritch presence tend to engender unease at best and hatred at worst.
Deep One Hybrids come from H.P. Lovecraft's 1931 novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth, which you can read on Wikisource here.
