Widely known but shrouded in rumour and myth, leprechauns are diminutive lesser fey who live in remote places. In the minds of most non-fey, they are jolly little men in green finery who guard treasure in a pot at the end of a rainbow; in fact, leprechauns are mischeivous but mostly solitary, generally prefer to wear red, and conjure illusory gold in order to get treasure-hunting mortals off their backs.
Leprechauns originated as "defective" sons of powerful fey beings - small and stunted, lacking their parents' vast magical abilities, exiled from the Feywild to save their parents embarassment. Those banished leprechauns occasionally broke their solitude to have children with other lesser fey beings, and now, centuries later, leprechauns have become a self-sustaining species in their own right. Most leprechauns live on isolated homesteads, either alone or with their immediate family, and the idea of "trooping" in larger groups is nearly unheard of. The average leprechaun resembles a human or halfling around 3 feet tall, with pointed ears and round, pleasant features. Many leprechauns have red hair, but many also have black, brown, or occasionally blonde. Most have pale or ruddy complexions, but some appear more tanned. Most male leprechauns grow facial hair, but rarely wear it as long or elaborate as that of dwarves. Leprechauns have a distinct preference for red clothing, though some do in fact wear green, particularly if they are going among other species.
